Certification, or licensure, is Iowa’s process of gatekeeping community sensitive careers. Both school and public librarians have duties that need standardized levels of proficiency and are required to hold certification prior to employment. Additionally, certification can aid librarians with greater job and wage security by reducing the number of individuals qualified to enter the profession.
Most all additional types of librarians, though not required to possess certification, are required to hold a masters degree in Library and Information Sciences as a way to ensure a high level of competency in the role. Explore all Library and Information Science degree programs in Iowa.
