Library Staff Licensing Pathways
Certification, or licensure, is Utah’s process of gatekeeping professions whose professionals perform community sensitive tasks. For librarians, only school librarians are required to hold certification prior to employment and the reasoning is simple; they work with school-aged children and are charged with preparing our next generation to adeptly deal with the latest technologies in information and education.
However, all librarians in every job setting are being required to have a much greater skill set than in previous times. This being the case, an educational requirement of a masters degree in Library and Information Science is a universal requirement for entry-level positions.
