Certification, or licensure, is the process of gatekeeping community sensitive careers as a method to protect the public from negligent or dangerous people. In Nebraska, school librarians and public librarians are the two types of librarians who are required to hold certification prior to employment. This process requires specific education and criminal background checks in order to qualify for application and employment.

Additionally, most all other types of librarian in Nebraska are required to have an advanced level of education in the form of a masters degree in Library and Information Science prior to qualifying for entry-level positions.
