Certification, or licensure, is Maryland’s way of gatekeeping community sensitive occupations. For librarians, the school librarian and public librarian are the two specialties regulated by Maryland state law. However, most all other types of librarian in Maryland face educational gatekeeping through entry-level education requirements of masters degree in Library and Information Science.
