Certification, or licensure, is the process governing bodies employ to act as career gatekeepers. For librarians, the only specialty requiring official certification is that of school librarian. For most all other librarian specialties, gatekeeping manifests in the form of educational requirements by employers. Typically that requirement is a masters degree in Library and Information Sciences.
